Sunday Evening Whiskey Club

Jan 24 2010

1.17.10 Meeting @ Whiskey Thieves

Minutes for Sunday Evening Whiskey Club: January 17, 2010

Attendees: Dot, Shirley, Rosie, Helen, Hectorine, & Olga

Highlights:
-Alembic, to Rickhouse, to Whiskey Thieves turned out to the best scavenger hunt for bar ever because we found Steve, a tour de force of whiskey education.  And also introduced getting PBR (sans Dot) with our bourbon.  All bars have a tough act to follow.
- Drank a lot of bourbon.  Each of us found of favorites.
- Ate Turkish food.
- Watched a guy vomit at BART station
- Discussed & sang Amy Grant lyrics.  Unfortunately only one song could be remembered, so there was a lot of “baby baby” being heard for a long walk through the tenderloin.  Rosie gets brownie points for late night text delivery of second Amy Grant hit & lyrics.
- Final call for stragglers of the group at Lone Palm.  Dot went to Rye to make tell/hear bad jokes.  All parties had more bourbon.

Whiskey Tasted:
We focused (with Steve’s guidance) only on bourbons

1. Bourbon: Rock Hill Farms
2. Bourbon: Eagle Rare
3. Bourbon: Black Maple
4. Bourbon: Basil Hayden (favorite for Dot, Shirley, & Rosie)
5. Bourbon: Bulleit (favorite for Helen, Hectorine, & Olga)

Follow-Ups:
- Research what the heck it is we are supposed to pay attention to with whiskey that we can measure each one with.  e.g. flavors, fire, initial taste, throat feel.  We can already cross out swishing around in mouth - tested and disapproved by me.

Lessons:
- Steve is awesome.  Proposal to go back to Whiskey Thieves every 4th meeting to visit our friend.  We will make him love us.
- Bulleit bourbon does not taste the same at Lone Palm.  They need a Steve.
- Alembic may have events.  Call before going.
- Many bars in SF are closed on Sundays.
- Steve said you really should have ice in your bourbon, as it dilutes the alcohol too much.  Either take it straight or w/splash of water.  If you really want it cold, I recommend bringing your own ice cubes.

Next Meeting:
Alembic (second attempt)
January 24th
4:00pm

Cheers,
Olga
