SEWC in NYT...sort of →
Hectorine, Shirley, and Olga recently attended a scotch tasting at Omnivore Books in San Francisco. Very informative, and helped turn the corner on taste for Scotch whisky. Turns out, Scotch can be quite delicious and complex, and doesn’t necessarily require such a strong peaty flavor that only makes you wish you had some marshmellows to roast over the campfire in your glass. Also, a very...

Hudson Four Grain →
I am the main author of this blog, so I get to play favorites. And Hudson, you are my favorite. I love you. I tried the Four Grain and and Manhattan Rye and Baby Bourbon. All were delicious, but at least this evening, I went swayed to the Four Grain. Full of flavors that had a richness I had never experienced before in other whiskeys. The rye was heavy, given complexity with sweet corn, dry...

Russell's Reserve Rye →
A resounding hit with SEWC. A rye that is quite paletable from the Wild Turkey family. “Brilliant amber color. Vanilla bean, star anise, rye toast, cream brulee, and spice aromas are well defined and attractive. A round entry leads to a dry-yet-fruity medium-full body of caramel, honeyed nuts, cinnamon rye toast, and mint, pink peppercorn flavors. Finishes with a long sweet toffee,...

Heavier flavor than found in most Kentucky bourbons. Balance of sweet notes of toffee and savory wood character. Kick of fire to taste, a warm tingle lingers in the back of the throat.

Sazerac Rye →
An American Rye, meaning it’s mash is at least 51% rye. Beautiful amber color. Nice distinct vanilla, peppery smell with hint of clove. Warm spice to taste with a bit of sweetness. Finish has a pleasant warm journey down, lingering a bit in the back of the throat.

Very smooth bourbon with tones of oak and walnut. A nice option for those who want a clean whiskey with low bite. Part of the Jim Beam family.

High rye content for a bourbon (30%). Hints of vanilla & honey over notes of oak and bit of spice. A slight bite of alcohol hits the back of the throat, but goes down smooth.
